PROJECT 1

Diagramming Architectural Principles

(10% Group)

TASK:

The project involves researching an assigned architect and their key building, then producing a comprehensive set of architectural drawings at a 1:50 scale on A3 landscape format. The focus is on analyzing the building’s design intentions, contextual response to tropical settings, space planning, circulation patterns, and structural system. This analysis will be visually represented through five detailed diagrams and five diagrammatic models (8 x 8 x 8 cm) that illustrate the underlying architectural principles and ideas embedded in the building's design. The goal is to convey a deep understanding of how the architect's vision is realized through both drawings and physical models.

Architect: Damith Premathilake Architects
Building: Holiday Home at Diyathalawa

The project provided an invaluable learning experience, enhancing my understanding of architectural design and its multifaceted aspects. By delving into the main design intentions, contextual settings, space planning, circulation patterns, and structural systems of a key building, I gained a comprehensive grasp of how architects realize their vision through various elements. This exploration allowed me to appreciate the intricate balance between form, function, and environment in architecture.

Intrapersonal Skills:

The project also improved my digital literacy by requiring extensive research into the assigned building and architect. This included investigating architectural styles, design principles, and contextual factors. The use of digital tools and resources allowed me to gather detailed information and deepen my understanding of the architectural context, such as the tropical setting of the holiday home in Diyatalawa. This research not only informed my diagrams but also enhanced my ability to critically engage with architectural works and their broader implications.

Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills:

Creating a good diagram involves identifying and emphasizing the most critical aspects of the building’s design. The process starts with focusing on what's important—distilling complex information into clear, concise visual representations. To achieve this, I learned to prioritize key elements that convey essential information and avoid clutter. Effective diagrams must be to the point, highlighting significant features and relationships while simplifying the presentation of complex ideas. This approach ensures that the diagrams serve as insightful tools for understanding and communicating architectural concepts.
