Project Overview:

The group project explores the adaptive reuse of old shophouses in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, focusing on how these historical buildings can be repurposed to meet modern needs while preserving their cultural significance.

Required Tasks:

The tasks include identifying key issues, proposing solutions, and supporting these with case studies. The group will create a topic proposal, a research poster, and a video presentation to communicate their findings.

Expected Outcomes:

The project aims to produce a clear topic proposal, a visually engaging research poster, and a comprehensive video presentation, offering practical solutions for adaptive reuse in urban settings.

The project on the adaptive reuse of old shophouses in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee has deepened my appreciation for historical architecture and the challenge of balancing modernization with preservation. Through this study, I’ve learned that while modern development is inevitable, maintaining the integrity of historical structures is crucial. Many shophouses in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee have lost their authenticity due to alterations and generic commercial ventures. This project highlighted the importance of preserving these buildings' cultural and architectural value while integrating them into the contemporary urban landscape.

Thinking and Problem-Solving Skills:

This project sharpened our thinking and problem-solving skills by requiring us to analyze the impact of various issues and develop better solutions. We learned to understand the complexities of adaptive reuse and connect our findings with relevant case studies to propose effective strategies. This process enhanced our ability to think critically about preserving historical structures amidst modern pressures.

Citizenship and Global Perspective:

The project established a solid foundation for appreciating historical buildings and the importance of preserving them for future generations. By examining Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, we recognized how certain businesses and cultural landmarks contribute to a place's historical significance. Understanding the rich history and memories associated with these shophouses underscores the need to respect and maintain their cultural heritage amidst ongoing urban development.
