MY THOUGHTS AND OVERALL
TAA JOURNEY

REFLECTION:

This semester in the Theory of Asian Architecture module has been quite enriching, and I'd like to reflect on my experience:

  1. Lectures: The lectures in this module provided invaluable insights and guidance, greatly enhancing my progress throughout the course. For Project 1, I developed a better understanding of sketching techniques. Initially, my approach was limited, but with Mr. Koh Jing Hao’s guidance, I learned to create more expressive and accurate sketches. In Project 2, Mr. Koh Jing Hao’s instruction on framework development and space planning was instrumental in producing a more effective research poster. These experiences have broadened my perspective and improved my technical skills.

  2. Module Assessments: The projects within this module were well-chosen, offering deep insights into Asian architecture. They challenged me to engage with both historical and contemporary issues, enhancing my understanding of architectural preservation and adaptation. The hands-on approach of the assessments allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, furthering my appreciation of the complexities involved in preserving cultural heritage while addressing modern needs.

  3. Projects:

The first project, focused on sketching, significantly enhanced my technical skills and understanding of architectural representation. Initially, my approach was limited, but under Mr. Koh Jing Hao’s guidance, I learned to create more expressive and accurate sketches. This improvement has been crucial in communicating design concepts effectively and has broadened my perspective on the role of sketches in the architectural design process.

In the second project, examining the adaptive reuse of old shophouses in Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, I delved into the complexities of integrating historical buildings with modern needs. This project underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage while adapting structures for contemporary use, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in maintaining historical authenticity. Together, these projects have enriched my architectural approach by combining refined technical skills with a deeper appreciation for historical preservation, providing a well-rounded perspective on both design and cultural context.
