ARCHITECTURE AND ENVIRONMENT
This module teaches students about environmental considerations in architecture, emphasizing passive design and energy efficiency. It covers climate's influence on building design and includes lectures, tutorials, and assessments. Students work on real-life case studies to develop environmentally conscious designs.
ASSIGNMENT 2
CASE STUDY
GROUP PROJECT (40%)
TASK:
In this task, students conduct comprehensive research on green buildings in Malaysia accredited by bodies such as GBI, LEED, or BREEAM. They select one building for an in-depth case study, analyzing its environmental strategies focusing on energy performance, comfort, and health aspects. Gathering relevant data and insights, they compile information to inform their case study. This information is then creatively presented on an A1 poster, highlighting the environmental strategies and achievements of the selected building. Additionally, students create a 1-minute video summarizing the key findings and insights from the case study, intended for social media sharing. Throughout the task, sustainability is emphasized, reflecting the importance of environmentally friendly practices in building design.
After some discussion, our group has selected IPC Shopping Centre as our focus. Situated near The Curve in Mutiara Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia, this shopping center is anchored by IKEA and has achieved Malaysia's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for a retail premise under the Operations & Maintenance rating system, along with a Green Building Index (GBI) certificate in September 2020. Before conducting a site visit to familiarize ourselves with the location and capture footage for our video, we collected some initial data to better understand the premises.
After familiarizing ourselves with the building, we conducted further in-depth research to delve into its various aspects. This information was meticulously presented on our A1 poster, where we aimed to highlight each sustainable point with clarity and creativity. Utilizing diagrams and visuals, we sought to make the information engaging and easily understandable for viewers. Additionally, we brainstormed different approaches for our video, aiming to strike a balance between educational content and entertainment value. Through innovative editing techniques, we aimed to ensure that our video would captivate viewers while effectively conveying the importance of sustainability in the context of IPC Shopping Centre.
Participating in the project offers numerous benefits. Participants deepen their understanding of green building practices through research and analysis of IPC Shopping Centre's sustainable features, while also honing research, analysis, and presentation skills. By highlighting the center's green initiatives, the project promotes sustainability in the built environment, inspiring others to adopt similar practices. Sharing educational content fosters community engagement and dialogue on sustainable development. Additionally, involvement enhances institutional or individual reputation and opens doors for further collaboration and recognition. Through hands-on research and site visits, participants gain practical experience, bridging theory with real-world application and preparing them for future endeavors in sustainability and environmental management.
Lifelong Learning
Participants engage in continuous learning through research, analysis, and presentation of sustainable practices, fostering a deeper understanding of environmental conservation and green building initiatives.
Intrapersonal Skills
Individuals develop intrapersonal skills by effectively managing tasks, conducting thorough research, and adhering to deadlines. They learn the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and discipline in achieving project goals.
Digital Literacy
Participants enhance their digital literacy skills by utilizing technology to gather, analyze, and present data. They gain proficiency in creating engaging educational content through posters and videos, effectively communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences.
